If you haven’t been keeping up with BSNYC, for-shame! Seriously though, he’s a great writer and cycling enthusiast. Actually, I’d says he enthusiastic about making fun of cycling enthusiasts while being a cyclist. He tows a hard line.
To the point of the mater though, he found himself caught by the long arm of the law for running a red light on a bike. Being cited for running a red on a bike is something I have “heard” of happening but don’t know much about it. It seems on par with being charged for ripping off someones band-aide.
Motorists in general rank “breaking the rules of the road” as reason #1 with a bullet on why they hate cyclists. To an extent its true, cyclist break the rules of the road quite often. In some cases I can see how it infuriates motorists, but I don’t have any sympathy for them. The physical exertion of moving ones foot from accelerator to brake is hardly the same as performing a stop on bike, get off a pedal and stand, only to mash up again to the right speed seconds later. Stopping and starting on a bike is one if not my number one biggest commuting annoyance. Do I accept that I sometimes break the law? Yes, I do. Can most motorists accept I have a decent reason for it? No, I don’t believe so. In todays group think society, when another motorists cuts off a fellow motorist the cutee just chocks it up to “That guys a douche”. However when a cyclist takes the right lane preventing the motorist from killing the cyclist the motorist believes are cyclists are assholes who should be on the side walk. Since the motorists “group” is superior and deserves more respect than the cyclist. Add in the fact that motorist see cyclist blow stop sign and signals just adds to the hatred of the whole cycling group.
Bike hatred seems to be a slippery slope these days.
